99 is the atomic number of Einsteinium. It was discovered in 1952 in the debris of the first H-bomb explosion and named after Albert Einstein.

The earliest known reference to a 99-flake ice-cream with a chocolate flake was in 1935. One idea links it to a shop in Scotland at 99 Portobello High St which added chocolate flakes to its ice-creams.
