What is Whole Numbers?
Whole Numbers is Any of the numbers {0, 1, 2, 3, ...} etc. There is no fractional or decimal part. And no negatives. Example: 5, 49 and 980 are all whole numbers.
Reading Whole Numbers
Reading whole numbers may be performed as follows:
- Starting at the decimal place (or where it would be located if inserted), place commas to the left of every three digits until only three or few numbers remain to the left.(Note: For numbers less than 1000, this step should be skipped)
- Read the number in the leftmost group followed by the name of its number group (e.g., million, thousand).
- Continue Step #2 from left to right until all remaining groups have been read.
Examples:
- 2136922281 = 2,136,922,281 is read as: two billion, one hundred thirty-six million, nine hundred twenty-two thousand, two hundred eighty-one
- 1,342 is read as: one thousand, three hundred forty-two
- 119,203,980 is read as: one hundred nineteen million, two hundred three thousand, nine hundred eighty
Writing Whole Numbers
Whole numbers from 0 through 20 are written as single words.
Examples:
- 5 is written as five
- 13 is written as thirteen
- 11 is written as eleven
- 9 is written as nine
Whole numbers from 21 through 99, which do not end in zero are written as hyphenated words.
- 36 is written as thirty-six
- 78 is written as seventy-eight
- 52 is written as fifty-two
Whole numbers should not include the word 'and' in written form:
- 453 is written as four hundred fifty-three (not four hundred and fifty-three)
- 10,013 is written as ten thousand thirteen (not ten thousand and thirteen)
